Job description
We are looking for a passionate linguist who brings language learning to life through purposeful conversation, authentic resources and engaging cultural experiences. You will develop students listening, speaking, reading and writing skills, building secure foundations in phonics, vocabulary and grammar. Through high expectations and skilful adaptation, you will support beginners, continuing learners and heritage-language speakers to communicate with increasing accuracy, fluency and independence.
Beyond the classroom, you will enrich students experiences through language clubs, cultural events and opportunities to celebrate our multilingual community. Embodying our values of Ambition, Responsibility and Respect, you will encourage students to appreciate different perspectives and contribute to a collaborative department and a community in which character, wellbeing and achievement are equally valued.
Teaching and Learning
• Demonstrate strong subject knowledge and linguistic proficiency, teaching MFL at Key Stage 3 and, as provision develops, Key Stages 4 and 5.
• Teach an agreed timetable within MFL according to the postholder s language specialisms, contributing to Spanish provision and the development of additional languages where appropriate.
• Deliver engaging and well-structured lessons that develop students listening, speaking, reading and writing, alongside intercultural understanding and confidence in communication.
• Plan and deliver schemes of work aligned with the National Curriculum for England at KS3 and relevant examination specifications at KS4 and KS5 as provision develops.
• Prepare students effectively for GCSE/IGCSE and A-Level language qualifications where offered, in line with the school s planned expansion.
• Teach phonics, sound spelling relationships, vocabulary and grammar systematically, enabling students to understand and produce increasingly accurate and complex language.
• Model accurate pronunciation, intonation and language use; provide purposeful opportunities for target-language interaction, spontaneous speech and sustained communication.
• Provide appropriate challenge and support for beginners, continuing learners and heritage-language speakers, taking account of their different starting points.
• Plan lessons and sequences of learning that meet the needs of all learners, ensuring challenge and support across the full ability range.
• Use assessment effectively to monitor student progress, inform planning and support students in achieving their potential.
• Develop students independence, resilience and language-learning strategies through retrieval, regular practice, purposeful communication and reflection.
• Create stimulating language-learning environments and displays, using authentic texts, audio, visual materials and cultural resources appropriate to students proficiency.
• Promote intercultural awareness and respect through the study of the communities and cultures associated with the languages taught.
• Use a range of teaching strategies, including digital technology and blended learning approaches, to enhance student engagement and progress.
• Support the needs of all learners, including POD (SEN), EAL and G&T students, through effective differentiation and inclusive teaching practices.
• Contribute to MFL curriculum development and progression towards KS4 provision in 2027/28 and subsequent A-Level study, maintaining ambitious expectations for all learners.
Assessment, Progress and Achievement
• Monitor and track student progress using assessment data to inform teaching and identify students who require additional challenge or support.
• Provide clear and constructive feedback that improves pronunciation, comprehension, vocabulary, grammatical accuracy, fluency and examination performance.
• Prepare students effectively for internal and external assessments through structured guidance, revision strategies and exam preparation.
• Contribute to departmental moderation and standardisation processes to ensure accurate and consistent assessment.
• Conduct and record speaking assessments and, where appropriately trained, speaking examinations in accordance with awarding-body requirements, working with the Examinations Officer.
• Support students in developing the receptive and productive language skills, translation and extended responses required by the relevant examination specifications.
• Where the postholder has the relevant expertise, support GCSE Russian, Spanish, French, Italian or other language teaching or speaking examinations, subject to the school s agreed provision and awarding-body requirements.
Behaviour Management and Student Wellbeing
• Follow the school s behaviour policy and maintain high expectations for student conduct and engagement.
• Manage classes effectively using positive behaviour strategies that support a focused and productive learning environment.
• Build positive relationships with students, encouraging respect, responsibility and independence.
• Act as a positive role model and uphold the values and ethos of the school.
• Support the pastoral development of students and contribute to the wider wellbeing and safeguarding of all learners.
Professional Responsibilities and Wider Contribution
• Contribute to the wider life of the school through enrichment activities, clubs and competitions that extend students learning beyond the classroom.
• Support whole-school initiatives and cross-curricular opportunities that promote creativity, sustainability, innovation and enterprise.
• Participate in departmental planning, professional development and collaborative working with colleagues.
• Maintain accurate records and contribute to reporting and parent communication processes.
• Carry out duties and responsibilities as directed in line with the school s policies and expectations.
• Uphold the highest standards of safeguarding, child protection and professional conduct at all times.
• Bachelor s degree in a related subject, with a PGCE or other recognised teaching qualification.
