ATS-friendly CV for Gulf jobs (2026 guide)

Facts last checked 24 October 2026 · sources linked at the end

Many large Gulf employers receive CVs through an applicant tracking system (ATS) — software that stores, searches and sometimes ranks applications. To get through it, send a single-column CV with standard headings, real text (no images or text boxes) and the keywords of the job ad, in the format the application asks for. Then add what Gulf recruiters expect: nationality, visa status, notice period and languages.

What an ATS does — and what it does not

An applicant tracking system is software employers use to organise, search and evaluate job applications. Some only store CVs; some screen on basic requirements through knockout questions (for example “Do you hold a valid UAE driving licence?”); the most advanced rank applicants with AI. According to Jobscan, 97.4% of Fortune 500 companies had a detectable ATS in 2026 (97.8% in 2025). That measures adoption, not rejection.

You will often read that “75% of CVs are rejected by ATS before a human sees them”. That number traces to a 2012 sales pitch and was never backed by a published method. What is real: recruiters search their ATS by keywords, and employers can set automatic knockout rules. So the goal is a CV the system can read and a recruiter can find.

Do Gulf employers use ATS?

  • ADNOC states that applications must arrive through its careers portal or LinkedIn, and that emailed CVs may not be processed.
  • Saudi Aramco’s expat careers site runs on SAP SuccessFactors components, with a separate Avature talent community.
  • A 2026 index of 57 large GCC employers by a CV-writing company identified the system for 41: Oracle products on 18 careers paths and SAP SuccessFactors on 7, with examples including Emaar, Emirates NBD and FAB (Oracle), SABIC, stc and Saudia (SuccessFactors) and Dubai Government’s Dubai Careers portal (Taleo). It is a sample of big employers, not a survey of the market.

In short: if you apply to banks, energy, airlines, government or large groups, assume your CV is parsed by software first.

The ATS-safe format

DoAvoid
One column, full page widthTwo-column templates, sidebars
Standard headings: Work Experience, Education, SkillsCreative headings (“My journey”)
Real text, standard font, 10–12 ptText inside images, tables, text boxes or graphics
Contact details in the body, at the topKey details only in the header or footer
The word processor’s own bulletsTyped symbols and icons
The file type and size the application asks forScanned PDFs; very large files

Two details matter in Gulf systems. Oracle Taleo — used by several Gulf employers — has a default upload limit of 100 KB unless the employer raises it, and it may not parse a CV written in a different language from the application. Send an English CV to an English job ad.

Keywords: match the job ad, honestly

Recruiters search the ATS for the job title, tools, certifications and licences in the ad. Use the ad’s exact wording where it is true for you — “IFRS”, “SAP FI”, “NEBOSH IGC”, “DHA licence” — in your summary and in the role where you used it. Do not paste keywords you cannot back up: the interview will find out.

What a Gulf CV includes that a Western one often does not

These are common practice across the Gulf, described by regional job boards — not legal requirements. When the application asks for something specific, follow the application.

  • Nationality — usually stated under personal details (both, if you hold two).
  • Visa / residence status and location — if you are already in the country, say so (for example employment, dependent or visit visa). Many employers prefer candidates who can start without a visa change.
  • Notice period / availability — when you can start.
  • Languages — the UAE government advises that knowing Arabic, even spoken, is an advantage.
  • Driving licence — worth listing for sales and field roles.
  • Photo — common, especially for customer-facing roles, but not universal.
  • Date of birth and marital status — still seen, but optional. Saudi rules now prohibit discrimination by age or marital status in job ads and interviews.

Saudi Arabia: since March 2021 most private-sector expatriates can move to a new employer at the end of their contract without the current employer’s consent. Write “transferable” only if it is true for you, and never put your iqama or passport number on a CV.

Length and attachments

One to two pages is enough, even with decades of experience. Lead each role with results you can measure. Leave out passport copies and certificates unless the employer asks — you will be asked for them later in the process.

Questions, answered

Do Gulf employers use applicant tracking systems (ATS)?
Many large ones do. ADNOC says applications must come through its careers portal or LinkedIn, and a 2026 vendor index of 57 large GCC employers found Oracle or SAP SuccessFactors systems behind many careers sites, including Emirates NBD, FAB, SABIC and stc. Smaller employers often still work by email.
Is it true that 75% of CVs are rejected by ATS?
No. The figure traces back to a 2012 sales pitch by a resume-optimisation company and never had a published method. ATS can reject applicants through knockout questions an employer sets, but there is no published rejection rate.
Should I put a photo on my CV for Gulf jobs?
A photo is common in Gulf hiring, especially for customer-facing roles, but it is not universal and is less common at multinationals. Follow the job ad.
Do I need to include my date of birth and marital status?
They still appear on many Gulf CVs, but they are optional. Saudi rules now ban discrimination by age or marital status in job ads and interviews. Include them only if the application asks.
What file format should my CV be in?
Follow the application’s instructions. Word (.docx) and text-based PDF are accepted by most systems; Oracle Taleo, for example, parses .doc, .docx, .pdf, .rtf and .txt, with a default 100 KB file limit unless the employer changes it.
How long should a Gulf CV be?
One to two pages, even with many years of experience. Do not attach passport copies or certificates unless the employer asks for them.
