Job description
The Mechanical Maintenance Technician in Paint Shop is responsible for the preventive, corrective, and predictive maintenance of all mechanical equipment within the automotive paint shop. The role ensures safe, reliable, and efficient operation of paint shop machinery, including conveyors, pumps, spray booths, ovens, robots, and associated utility systems. The technician supports production targets by minimizing downtime, maintaining equipment condition, and ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards.
Responsibilities:
Mechanical Equipment Maintenance:
• Perform scheduled preventive maintenance on paint shop mechanical systems such as conveyors, roller beds pumps, spray booths, Air handling units, ovens, robotic peripherals, turntables, and skids.
• Diagnose and repair mechanical faults, breakdowns, and abnormal equipment behavior.
• Conduct predictive maintenance activities using vibration analysis, thermography, and condition monitoring techniques.
• Replace or repair worn components including bearings, seals, belts, chains, gearboxes, and mechanical assemblies.
Installation & Commissioning Support:
• Assist with installation, alignment, setup, and commissioning of new mechanical equipment.
• Support equipment upgrades, retrofits, and approved modifications.
• Verify proper mechanical operation before handover to production.
Troubleshooting & Breakdown Response:
• Respond promptly to mechanical breakdowns to restore equipment safely and efficiently.
• Use technical manuals, drawings, and schematics to identify root causes of failures.
• Work closely with electrical and automation technicians for integrated system troubleshooting.
Process & Quality Support:
• Ensure mechanical systems operate within defined process limits to support paint quality.
• Support process tests such as flow rate, sealing effectiveness, adhesion, and equipment repeatability as required.
• Identify and report mechanical conditions that could impact paint quality or safety.
Safety & Compliance:
• Strictly follow PPE usage, lockout/tagout (LOTO), confined space, and hazardous area procedures.
• Ensure all maintenance work complies with company policies, OEM standards, and applicable regulations.
• Proactively identify and report safety hazards, near misses, and unsafe conditions.
Documentation & Coordination:
• Complete maintenance work orders, logs, and equipment history accurately.
• Track mechanical spare part usage and report inventory requirements.
• Communicate equipment status, risks, and completed work with supervisors and cross functional teams.
• High School Diploma or equivalent in mechanical & mechatronics engineering.
• Technical or vocational training in Mechanical Maintenance is preferred.
• 2-4 years of mechanical maintenance experience in automotive manufacturing or paint shop environments.
• Experience with automated paint shop equipment and robotic systems is preferred.
• Automotive manufacturing paint shop and maintenance areas.
• Regular exposure to conveyors, ovens, and mechanical equipment.
• Use of PPE is mandatory during all maintenance activities.
• Shift work and on-call support as required by production schedules.
• Skills:
• Strong mechanical troubleshooting and repair capability.
• Knowledge of hydraulic, pneumatic, and mechanical systems.
• Ability to read and interpret mechanical drawings, piping diagrams manuals, and work instructions.
• Familiarity with paint shop equipment and continuous conveyor systems.
• High attention to detail and strong safety mindset.
• Effective problem-solving skills for mechanical faults.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a maintenance team.
• Clear communication with production, engineering, and maintenance teams.
• Mechanical maintenance certification from recognized institutions or equipment manufacturers. (Preferred).
• OSHA Safety Training or equivalent EHS-related certification. (Preferred).
