POSITION SUMMARY The Laboratory Technician supports the teaching and research activities of the School of Engineering and Science by ensuring laboratories are safe, well maintained, and fully operational. The role involves preparing laboratory setups, maintaining equipment, supporting practical classes, enforcing health and safety standards, and providing technical assistance to academic staff and students. This is a hands on, student facing role critical to delivering high quality laboratory learning experiences. RESPONSIBILITIES Core Responsibilities Laboratory Operations & Support Prepare laboratories for practical classes, demonstrations, and assessments. Set up, test, and dismantle laboratory equipment and experiments as per academic requirements. Provide in class technical support during laboratory sessions. Ensure laboratories are clean, organized, and ready for use at all times. Equipment & Resource Management Maintain, calibrate, and troubleshoot laboratory equipment and instruments. Monitor usage and condition of laboratory tools, consumables, and materials. Maintain accurate inventory records and report low stock or replacement needs. Coordinate with suppliers and internal teams for procurement and servicing of equipment. Health, Safety & Compliance Ensure compliance with laboratory safety standards, university policies, and regulatory requirements. Conduct routine safety checks and report hazards or incidents immediately. Assist in induction and safety briefings for students and staff using laboratories. Maintain safety documentation, risk assessments, and SOPs as required. Academic & Research Support Provide technical assistance to academic staff for teaching activities and applied research projects. Support student projects, capstone work, and applied learning activities where required. Assist with laboratory based assessments and experiments. Administrative & Miscellaneous Duties Maintain laboratory schedules and coordinate access. Support accreditation, audits, or inspections related to laboratories. Assist with university events, open days, and demonstrations involving lab facilities. Undertake any other reasonable duties as assigned by the Head of School or management. RELATIONSHIPS Work closely with academic staff and students within the School of Engineering and Science to support teaching and learning activities. Collaborate with cross functional teams, including procurement and operations, as required to support academic delivery and administrative processes
• Diploma or bachelor s degree in mechanical engineering or a related technical field.
• 2 5 years of relevant experience in an academic or industrial laboratory environment
• Hands-on experience in mechanical engineering laboratories, equipment setup, maintenance, and support for teaching and practical sessions.
• Technical Skills: Knowledge of mechanical lab equipment, calibration, troubleshooting, safety procedures, and basic instrumentation.
• Soft Skills: Strong attention to detail, teamwork, communication skills, organizational skills, and a student-focused approach.
• Safety Certification, First Aid Certification, Fire Safety Certification, basic technical software proficiency, and any relevant technical training certificates.
