Job description

**Job Purpose** The Asphalt Screwman is responsible for operating and assisting with the screed system of an asphalt paving machine to ensure the asphalt layer is placed at the required **width, thickness, level, crossfall, slope, and surface finish** in accordance with approved drawings, specifications, and project requirements. The position requires close coordination with the Asphalt Paver Operator, Foreman, Surveyor, Roller Operators, and Site Engineer to achieve the required paving quality and productivity. **Key Responsibilities** * Operate and control the screed assembly of the asphalt paving machine under the direction of the Paver Operator and Site Engineer. * Monitor asphalt mat thickness, width, level, crossfall, and surface finish during paving operations. * Make appropriate screed adjustments to maintain the required asphalt thickness and profile. * Assist in setting and maintaining screed extensions according to the required paving width. * Monitor screed performance and identify irregularities during paving. * Ensure proper heating and operation of the screed system before and during paving. * Check screed plates, heaters, sensors, tampers, vibrators, and related components for proper operation. * Coordinate with the Paver Operator to maintain consistent paving speed and asphalt flow. * Monitor the asphalt mat behind the paver and immediately report defects such as segregation, tearing, unevenness, waves, or inconsistent thickness. * Assist with maintaining the correct longitudinal and transverse profile of the asphalt layer. * Monitor automatic grade\-control and slope\-control systems where applicable. * Coordinate with the Surveyor regarding reference levels, string lines, sensors, and required elevations. * Assist the paving crew in maintaining the required line and level throughout the work. * Ensure smooth transitions at joints, edges, tie\-ins, ramps, intersections, and other critical areas. * Assist in checking and maintaining proper longitudinal and transverse joints. * Coordinate with Roller Operators to ensure proper compaction sequence and avoid defects in the finished surface. * Monitor the condition and temperature of asphalt material during paving and report abnormal conditions to the Foreman. * Assist with handwork around manholes, kerbs, drainage structures, utility covers, edges, and areas inaccessible to the paver. * Maintain proper cleanliness of the screed and remove accumulated asphalt material when required. * Assist in daily cleaning, lubrication, and basic maintenance of the screed assembly. * Report mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, or screed\-related problems immediately to the Paver Operator or Supervisor. * Follow daily paving plans, method statements, and instructions from the Site Engineer or Asphalt Foreman. * Maintain accurate records or assist with recording paving quantities, widths, thicknesses, and other relevant information when required. * Ensure continuous and uniform asphalt flow through the paver. * Maintain consistent paving speed in coordination with the paving team. * Ensure correct screed settings before starting paving operations. * Monitor asphalt delivery and avoid unnecessary stoppages of the paver. * Assist in achieving uniform mat density and surface appearance. * Ensure the required asphalt layer thickness is maintained. * Assist in minimizing segregation and surface irregularities. * Ensure proper treatment of construction joints and transverse joints. * Coordinate paving activities with asphalt delivery trucks and compaction equipment. * Follow the approved paving sequence and daily production requirements. * Ensure paving activities comply with approved drawings, specifications, method statements, and project requirements. * Monitor the finished asphalt surface for: * Uniformity * Correct thickness * Correct level * Crossfall/slope * Surface texture * Proper edges * Joint quality * Immediately report any quality issues to the Asphalt Foreman or Site Engineer. * Assist QA/QC personnel during inspections and testing. * Support corrective actions when deficiencies are identified. * Ensure no unnecessary damage occurs to newly laid asphalt. **The Screwman should have practical knowledge of the following:** * Asphalt paver screed assembly * Screed extensions * Screed heating system * Tamper bars * Vibrators * Automatic grade\-control system * Slope/crossfall control system * Grade sensors * String\-line sensors * Basic hand tools * Measuring tape and level * Temperature measuring equipment * Follow all company and project HSE policies and procedures. * Wear required PPE at all times. * Maintain a safe distance from moving construction equipment. * Follow proper procedures when working around asphalt pavers, rollers, and dump trucks. * Exercise extreme caution around hot asphalt and heated screed components. * Never approach or adjust moving machinery without proper authorization. * Follow Lockout/Tagout procedures when required for maintenance or cleaning. * Maintain safe access and working areas around the paving operation. * Report unsafe conditions, hazards, incidents, and near misses immediately. * Maintain good housekeeping around the paving equipment and work area. * Coordinate closely with the Paver Operator during all paving activities. * Follow instructions from the Asphalt Foreman and Site Engineer. * Coordinate with Surveyors regarding grade and level requirements. * Coordinate with Roller Operators regarding compaction sequence. * Communicate any change in asphalt consistency, temperature, thickness, or surface condition immediately. * Assist the paving team in resolving operational issues without compromising safety or quality. **Education \& Qualification** * Basic education or technical/vocational qualification preferred. * Formal education may be substituted by relevant practical experience. * Training/certification in asphalt paving or heavy equipment operations is an advantage. **Experience** * **05 years of relevant experience** as a Screwman / Asphalt Screed Technician. * Proven experience working with asphalt pavers on road construction projects. * Experience in asphalt wearing course, binder course, base course, and road rehabilitation works. * Experience with modern asphalt pavers and automatic grade/slope\-control systems is preferred. * **GCC/Qatar road construction experience** is an advantage. * Experience on major infrastructure, Ashghal, highway, road, or urban development projects is preferred.
